Should Writers Write for Free?

I this piece from the Review section of the New York Times on the internet. As I’m not a paid subscriber to the NYT I couldn’t help thinking that accessing their paper for free is only exacerbating the problem. And that’s that so many writers (and artists and musicians) are constantly asked to provide their work for free. It’s usually dressed up as being good publicity but truthfully I’ve never bought a book because I’ve read a piece on My Holiday Hell by an author in a newspaper and I don’t suppose very many other people have either. What do you think?
